Artist: Vue
My first question when listening to this album was “When did the Hives change their name to Vue?” The two band’s music is very similar. I am not a fan of the Hives. Anyone that does happen to be a fan of the Hives or The Strokes, however, will surely like Vue. I am not a fan of modern bands who sound like they were born in 69’. The lead singer of Vue, Rex Shelverton, annoys me with his voice, but so does every singer like him.
Almost every track on the record sounds the same, which is probably exactly what they are supposed to sound like, but I’m not a fan of its repetitive nature. Basically, if I don’t like anything about the first track on an album, I’m not going to give that album a chance. From the first 30 seconds of this album, I instantly didn’t like it. The lyrics aren’t that gripping, and the music sounds like a mild attempt to energize the listener.
With that said, there are some positive things about this ablum. Rex, who also plays guitar, Jonah Buffa, on guitar and harmonica, Jeremy Bringetto, on bass, Jessica Graves, on keyboard, and Rafael Orlin, on drums, have created a raw musical sound on every track. Most of the songs are just tolerable, but a few, like “prettyshapes” and “babies are for petting”, are actually ok songs. They’re worth more than one listen, anyway. They will probably be hits as long as this album gets good exposure.
Fans of the Vue’s genre of music will certainly love this album. Even though I don’t like this type of music, I have to say that Down for Whatever is a better than average album, and I can see that a lot of work was put into it. The "vue" from here is uncertain, but I have a feeling that if this album gets heard by the right people, Vue will be just as big as The Strokes.
