Sin City is the comic book adaptation we have all been waiting for. Taking three of Frank Miller's graphic novels of the same name, director Robert Rodriguez flawlessly translates them to the big screen.
The movie starts with "Yellow Bastard", the story of Hartigan (Bruce Willis), A bogartesque cop being forced into retirement. Rather than going out quietly on his last day of the job, Hartigan decides he needs to tie up the one loose end he has left. Catching serial murderer/rapist Roark Jr., who has kidnapped sweet Nancy, and has previously been untouchable because of his senator father and the protection of the entire Basin City Police Department.
Our last story, "The Big Fat Kill", focuses on Dwight (Clive Owen) who wants to protect his girlfriend Shellie (Brittany Murphy) and the rest of Basin City from the big ol' ball of violence that is Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro) and his friends. But, when Jackie boy leads him straight into Old Town, the red light district run by a merciless gang of hookers, all hell breaks loose.
The movie wraps it all up with the end of "Yellow Bastard", where once again Hartigan tries to save a grown up sweet Nancy (Jessica Alba) from a transformed Roark Jr.
Having a look all it's own, Sin City's breathtakingly beautiful interpretation of a monochromatic world, with a splash of color here and there (The blue of someone's eyes, or the red of their blood), and amazing cinematography courtesy of Rodriguez, easily makes this one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. Every scene will have you cringing away, or grinning like a fool at the Chandler-like dialogue, delivered by an All-Star cast. Every one of them look like they had the time of their lives making this movie. Elijah Wood's creepy cannibalistic character Kevin steals every scene he's in without ever saying a word. And, you can't help but cheer for Marv (Rourke), just trying to do what he thinks is right with his axe.
This movie is not for someone with a weak stomach. Even with it's cartoonish feel, and cutting out to pure black and white when things get a little too gruesome, I ended up having to turn my head away quite a few times. With pedophiles, hookers, and general nudity and violence abound, you are either going to love or hate this movie. I recommend locking the kids up and checking it out right away.
