There are some movies that leave you talking about them for weeks, even months afterwards. There are some movies that make you feel tied to the characters in some way or another. Maybe you identify with them or maybe you just admire them. Maybe you wish you were them, if only for a moment. Some movies have diverse casts with actors and actresses that deliver truly awesome performances. Then, there are some movies that make you sad, angry, happy…they bring out a whole range of emotions. Others have special effects cool enough to make your jaw drop. Some have endings that will leave you speechless. Having just one of these qualities will make a great movie, but Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King has them all. It is by far the best movie of the 21st century.

This movie is full of triumphs, tribulations, relationships, and change. You’ll see men triumph over the might of Sauron’s army. You’ll see Sam triumph over Shelob. You’ll see Frodo struggle with the burden of the ring. You’ll see the relationship between Denethor and his son Faramir crumble. Legolas and Gimli will become stronger friends, and the bond between the hobbits will become stronger as well. You’ll see Aragorn become the king he was meant to be. And you’ll see Gollum become a hero, however harmful his treachery is.

This movie is also full of jaw dropping special effects. Everything in the movie, from the huge olephants in battle, to the winged creatures the nazgul ride, to Shelob, to Gollum himself, they all look stunningly real. The stunts in this movie are incredible, especially the one Legolas pulls off. The battle itself is epic. The battle at helms deep in The Two Towers was massive, but it was a small skirmish compared to the battle at Minis Tirith. The scale of this battle is huge to say the least. With orcs and nazgul, trolls and catapults, olephants and evil men, there is almost an endless supply of enemies for Theoden and Gandalf to battle. Their struggle for survival truly seems hopeless.

If Tolkien could see the movie trilogy that Peter Jackson has created, I am sure he would agree that it is undoubtedly a monumental success. Peter Jackson took the last book and translated it into a film that not only does it justice, but builds on the world, characters, and battles that Tolkien envisioned. Granted, a few of the details that are in the book are barely addressed in the movie and sometimes not at all. Saruman doesn’t even make an appearance in the movie, but had influence in the book. I’m sure he’ll be there in the extended version, though. Obviously, some things just had to be left out, or shortened for the movie. Already three hours and twenty minutes long, the movie would simply be too long with everything included.

The Return of the King deserves every award that can be given to a film. It embodies everything we have come to love about Tolkien’s works. I believe this movie will be remembered as one of the greatest of all time. Even people who have never heard of Tolkien will be stunned by this film. Everyone should see this movie.
