It’s hard to believe The OC has already aired eleven episodes and it’s only a week before Thanksgiving. It’s true though. The OC began with an early premiere in August. I guess they had get off to an early start because they had so much background story to work up.
The OC centers around the lives of four teenagers in Newport Beach and two sets of parents. Sandy Cohen is appointed public defender for Ryan, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time while his brother decided to steal a car. Ryan has nowhere to turn after his mother kicks him out of his house until Sandy decides to take him in. To make a long story short, Sandy and his wife Kirsten decide to become Ryan’s legal guardians. Ryan and the Cohen’s son, Seth, become quick friends and Ryan starts to like the girl next door, Marissa.
The first eight episodes revolve around Ryan and Marissa’s developing relationship and Seth’s admiration for Marissa’s best friend, Summer. Then, the characters finally begin school in the ninth episode following a long string of bad incidents and a near death experience. From what I can see though, this is just the beginning. There is so much ensuing drama between these characters as well as their parents side plots that it is going to take them at least a few seasons to work it all out, hopefully at least.
There is something so intoxicating about this show. They do such an amazing job of drawing the audience into each and every character. The phenomenon of this show is very similar to what Beverly Hills 90210 created eleven years ago. You don’t think you are going to care about a bunch of well-to-do characters in a superficial show, but you really get drawn into them. Not only are the four teens interesting to watch, but I find myself getting pulled into the side plots of the parents which can be rather intense in their on way.
So, if you’re sitting at home bored on a Wednesday night, give The OC a try. You will be pleasantly surprised. It has definitely become my new favorite shows of the season.
