Originally calling themselves Providence , these 3 rockers formed Surviving August back in the summer of 2001. They became popular playing shows around Oklahoma, and they built a fan base in that area. In the following years they played shows with bands like the Gin Blossoms, Dexter Freebish, Flickerstick, Deep Blue Something, Dishwalla, Vallejo and Switchfoot, in addition to new and upcoming bands like Revis, Depswa, Fivespeed, and others that no one has really ever heard of. It wasn’t until late August of 2003 that they signed on with Kirtland Records, a record company based out of Dallas, Texas.
Their music can be compared to bands like Our Lady Peace, Switchfoot, The Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox 20, and blah blah blah, and etc. etc. etc. Their alternative rock sound is mixed with emotional lyrics that seem to prominently be about love and relationships. In fact, it seems their current self-titled release has nothing but powerful love ballads. So if you’re the lovey-dovey type who likes the passionate rock love songs, this album is probably worth checking out. A lot of their stuff reminds me of songs like Our Lady Peace’s “Somewhere Out There” hit that was so popular back in ’02.
Though they have some good music and decent lyrics, I’m not sure just how good these guys will do in the long run. In my opinion they sound a little too much like Our Lady Peace, and I think that fact will be a barrier in the way of making it big. Their songs are full of catchy, hooky choruses, but I think a few are just a little bit redundant. However, in spite of these minor setbacks, their music is still decently rockin’ and pleasant to the ears. Though I like their first single “NY Roll”, I think there are better songs on the self titled debut. So if don’t base your opinion off of this one song if you check these guys out.
Only time will tell their fate. Who knows, if no-talents like Ashlee Simpson can do so well these days, anything is possible. Not saying that Surviving August has no talent. Just saying Ashlee Simpson has no talent. They are currently touring around the Texas/Oklahoma area, so you might want to check them out if you live around there.
