Movie: Saved
Saved! is the inspirational story of how girl meets boy, boy thinks he's gay, girl sleeps with boy, boy still gay, girl's life goes to hell. I would say that's the basis of this film. Mary (Jena Malone) is one of the Christian Jewels, a social aristocracy at American Eagle Christian High School. The Christian Jewels are ran by over-powering Hilary Faye (Mandy Moore), who is the "most Christian" girl there. Anyways, Mary is the second in command of this little God's Army of high school girls, until her boyfriend Dean tells her he's gay. Then, all hell breaks loose.
After a "vision" from Christ telling her to help her boyfriend become straight again, she thinks the way to accomplish this divine task is to sleep with Dean. Doesn't work out so much, Dean's sent away, Mary gets knocked up. She has a falling out with the Jewels, finds a new love interest, new friends, and a new look at life and Faith. Crazy. What follows is one of the most well-written movies I have seen in a long time. The writers Brian Dannely and Michael Urban actually used jokes and sarcastic quips from the cast to get laughs, and not shooting a reindeer or someone falling into a pile of manure to win chuckles. Although the entire cast did an excellent job, the best part of the movie was Roland (Macaulay Culkin), Hillary Faye's wheelchair-bound brother.
I have made many a Macaulay Culkin jokes about how much he sucks. I take them all back. Except those about Home Alone 2, that still sucks. But otherwise, consider this my letter of apology to Macaulay Culkin. His delivery of sarcasm made my stomach hurt laughing. Between his lines and his "dancing" scene in the mall, he is one of the first things I think of when I remember this movie. Brilliant performance. Did you see that? Brilliant Performance. I don't think I've ever said that about anyone. Keep that in mind.
The chemistry between the cast members was fantastic, and helped to make this film to be as good as it was. The interaction between Culkin and Moore was great, the scenes with Malone and Moore were excellent as well. I suppose that so far I haven't given my high praise to Mandy Moore yet. At first I was apprehensive about seeing a "Mandy Moore" movie, as past examples have not been my genre, but she did a great job with the role of the psycho teenage Christian. She wasn't any kind of Disney-designed leading lady like a few others out there right now. She was funny, she was mean, and she was a good actress.
Man, I just can't make it any simpler, go see this film while it is still in theatres. It's great. This is going to be the first movie this year I will be seeing twice in the theatre. You may do the same. Also, I want you to keep this in mind while you watch it: There are actually people who act like this in the world, be careful.
