+++ Love Actually +++ Movie: Love Actually Cast:Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Laura Linney, Martine McCutchoen, Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy Rating: 1 of 5 Reviewer: Lilly Frost In most movies, there is usually at least a little time spent setting the scene and familiarizing the audience with the characters. Well, they forgot to do that in Love, Actually. I was just as confused when the movie ended as when it first began. I expected a lot more from this movie coming into it hearing it was written and directed by Richard Curtis, the same man who wrote “Notting Hill,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” and “Bridget Jones’ Diary.” Most movies have a hard enough time trying to juggle two or three storylines, but Curtis is feeling pretty confident by trying to cram a whopping eight stories into an excruciatingly long two hours. Here are a few plots to those eight stories.Hugh Grant plays England’s new prime minister who is attracted to a young girl on his staff named Natalie(McCutcheon). Colin Firth is a writer who falls for his Portuguese housekeeper. Emma Thomson and Alan Rickman are a married couple dealing with Rickman’s crush on his secretary. Laura Linney has a crush on one of her coworkers. There are quite a few more storylines, but I would spend all day trying to explain them. If Curtis had focused on maybe two or three of these storylines, then this movie may have been relatively enjoyable. Unfortunately, he spends so much time trying to build up all of these stories, that the movie never really goes anywhere significant. When it does, it is so sickly-sweet and predictable that’s it’s enough to make anyone puke. I admit, maybe I missed something important that would have made the movie better, but I actually fell asleep for about twenty minutes in the middle of the movie. This is the first time I have actually fallen asleep during a movie at a movie theatre. This is saying a lot considering I have seen a lot of boring movies. Unfortunately, when I woke up I felt as if nothing had really happened while I was asleep. The characters were basically at the exact same place as when I saw them last. The movie eventually ends like a happily-ever-after fairytale. Every guy got the girl and all is well. It is just way too predictable for me. Maybe they should have made a few of the stories end badly to at least add a bit of substance and reality, but of course, they didn’t.
