Biography:
Sell Yourself (Tell us what makes you unique):
I’m insane. No, not literally. I just have a quirky sense of humor that most people who don’t know me very well don’t seem to get. I have a pretty diverse taste in music, listening to everything from forties blues music to seventies psychedelic to nineties boy bands and all this new stuff. Most people don’t seem to believe that I listen to everything that I do (“You’re a Backstreet Boys fan and you listen to David Bowie?!”), including a music professor I’ve had. I also like to work, though currently without a job, I over compensate by studying way too much. This is probably why I’m so quiet and don’t get out very much, but... ehh, when I do it’s normally a concert in downtown Austin or driving around the state to follow my favorite local boy, Ryan Cabrera. I have an obsessive personality, which is probably apparent through my blog that I update two or three times of day when I’m at school. Yeah, obsessive. That’s me.
Why'd you choose to do journalism?:
I’ve been writing for school publications since my eighth grade year in school. In high school I attempted to turn my school newspaper into something much more than it was, attempting to convince my advisor to let me add a music column with no success. I’ve been a regular reader of Spin, Rolling Stone, and Blender for many years and with each issue, being a music journalist becomes something I want more and more. I’ve always wanted a job where I could do something I really enjoyed. I really like writing and I really like music, so why not music journalism?
What made you choose The Media Fix?:
After seeing an advertisement on a LiveJournal community, I knew it would be a good opportunity to get some practice as well as to help spread the word about new music. The fact that the website is made by people like me was also a cool idea. The website rocks. Why would I not want to write for it?
What are some of your long term dreams?:
I plan on graduating within four years with two degrees (Overachiever? Me? Naaah...) before I move to New York to focus on a journalism career. Ultimately, I’ll end up writing for Blender (my first choice) or another music magazine so that I can surround myself with music and writing. It would be awesome for me to get into shows for free, interview musicians, and just be a part of the music community without actually being musical. Plus I’m going to marry a guitar boy, so having connections would definitely help.
What was your favorite celebrity encounter?:
Can’t say I’ve had many. I just love living in Austin because there are so many local bands that are so easy to hang out with after a show and just chill with. I’m slightly bias, but seeing Ryan Cabrera twice in one weekend and the shocked look on his face when I arrived at his show the second day was so worth the fifteen hours I spent in my car that weekend. Nicest guy *ever*!
