A common inner controversy among American teenagers today is lack of identity. This has led to all sorts of back washed psychological issues. Why do I state this as a fact? Despite getting caught in a web of jargon that is dictated through the news media and advertisement channels expressing the newest fad as being the form of identity, most teens forget to look at their inner selves. Could it be that most teenagers don’t have the right foundation for soul searching as studies show that ‘appearances give us more pleasure than reality, especially when they help to satisfy our egos’ ~Emile Chevalier. Lyrics by musician Jack Johnson paint a beautiful picture: ‘A billion people die on the news tonight… who’s the one to decide it will be alright… why don’t the news casters cry when they read about people who die?’
Personal relationships have changed dramatically over the last century into a fluke of floundering when attractions become based on sexual appeal. An average looking female cannot pass a day in the mall without seeing subliminal advertisements saying “if you want to be prettier and more attractive, lose weight and show more of your skin.” How can any teen trying to find identity feel good about themselves when everyday they are put down by the same thing? This doesn’t exclude male teenagers, (yes guys) you are just as vulnerable. Here are some tips that can help you find a better sense of direction and meaning in life.
Talk to elderly couples and ask them what life was like when they were your age. You will be surprised how much has changed. (Heed their advice!) Turn off the television and get involved in recreational activities for example: sports, the arts, learning an instrument, even participation with the local community. Make a list of short and long term goals you would like to accomplish. I find reading a favorite book can spark the imagination… it’s candy for the brain! Find friends that have common interests, it always helps to have good encouragement from your friends. Most important of all: be patient with yourself and others; for the passion and joys will come when you learn to love yourself for who you are. Finding beauty in life is a reflection of yourself. Remember, nobody can take that away. Smile!
