Movie: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Gary Oldman, David Thewlis Rating: 4 of 5 stars Reviewer: Robin Cordeiro
Before I get into the review of this movie, I have a few confessions to make. When the whole Harry Potter fad first came into play, I made every single effort I could to not get into it. I refused to read the books, I didn't go to see the movies when they first came out. Believe me, I tried once or twice to read the first book in the series, but because of my profound ignorance to stay out of the trend, it didn't appeal to me, so I got no farther than the first paragraph. I've seen bits and pieces of the first and second movies when they've come on TV, but nothing good enough for me to change my opinion completely of the whole thing….until now.
Basically, this is my formal apology to all those Harry Potter fans whom I once referred to as "broom-toting nerds". After seeing this movie, (and whole-heartedly willing, might I add) I've completely changed my outlook on this lightning bolt-branded kid and his wild adventures. It seems kind of weird to start a liking to such a series with the third installment, but I can definitely say that after seeing The Prisoner of Azkaban, I'll have to seriously watch the first and second movies. So with no previous knowledge of the story, and not being one of the people who look for every single secret that the book refers to, I'll try my best to review it. I'm assuming the movie follows along with the book pretty well, according to the person I saw it with. The first thing I heard when the movie began was "Oh, I remember this part!" ... blah blah blah, you get the idea. It starts off in the home of Harry's aunt and uncle. They're eating dinner and treating Harry horribly. Harry's aunt starts badmouthing his parents, and outraged, Harry uses his wonderful wizard powers to make her swell up into a giant aunt-like balloon and she floats off. His uncle scolds Harry for his doings and Harry decides to run away. He ends up at a park, and right when seems quite unsure of what he's going to do, a bus pulls up, for those "lost or stranded wizards". He proceeds to the Leaky Cauldron, where surprisingly, he isn't punished for breaking the wizards law of doing magic outside of school. Instead he learns about Sirius Black, the prisoner who's escaped from Azkaban and is sent back for this third year at Hogwarts. What he doesn't learn is that this renegade prisoner has escaped to find him. And thus begins the adventure. Now don't ask me if the whole movie goes exactly hand-in-hand with the book, because I don't know. But I do know that I enjoyed myself immensely. This is the kind of movie that you go to, and find yourself being sucked into the story due to its ability to intrigue the viewer into wanting to know what's going to happen next. Its characters are loveable and humorous, but at the same time strong-willed and quick to do what's necessary of them. And because of the brilliance of this movie, and as much as I hate to admit it, I too am now one of those "Harry Potter-loving broom-toting nerds". Touché, Harry Potter. Touché.
