When asked what is most important to a person, many people often reply with four main things: family, health, job security, and friends. But why are these things important? Okay, so some of them are obvious, like job security, but what about friendship? What makes friendship so important to people? First, ask yourself who your friends are. Friends are people you trust, people who probably share some of the same interests as you, people who are there for you in times of trouble, and people who you love to spend time with. Having friends can help build confidence and social skills, two very important traits needed to succeed in life.
So what is important to keeping a good friendship? Trust is probably the biggest thing. It's important that you feel confident that the people you let into your life will be a positive influence. You should be able to talk to them about nearly anything and not worry about it being repeated to others. You should also trust that they will be there to help you when needed, as long as you always return the favor. There should always be an equal amount of giving and taking in a friendship, if one friend always pays for the night out, that friend may soon become resentful and not want to go out anymore. This goes for all aspects of giving & taking, not just money wise. If you need a shoulder to cry on, you should be a shoulder to cry on as well. You should also enjoy spending time together. These are only a few tidbits as to how to maintain a strong friendship. And, although there may be many ups and downs to having a friend, the knowledge of knowing you're not alone is priceless.
